Stranglers DocumentaryJuly 18th 2001

BBC Radio 2 are to broadcast a documentary on the band next month. The time and date we currently have from management is Saturday 11th August at 8pm (UK time). In the UK, this show will be broadcast on 88-91 FM. Outside the UK, try the webcast on www.bbc.co.uk/radio2.

We received the following from the BBC this morning:

Men In Black - The Stranglers' Story - TX BBC Radio 2, August 11th 2001 Presented by Glen Matlock

Finally, the truth...

For the first time since the night in 1990 when he phoned the band and told them he wasn't coming back, former front man Hugh Cornwell has agreed to take part in a programme with his ex-partners in pop and give his side of the story. In interviews recorded exclusively for Radio 2, the complete original line up give the low down on the good times and the bad times, the violence and the melodies that have filled the last quarter of a century.

Along with founder members JJ Burnel, Jet Black and Dave Greenfield, we also hear from newcomers Baz Warne and Paul Roberts on filling Hugh's shoes, and about life on the road and in the studio with one of the most notorious bands on the circuit.

These days the current line up are hard at work on new material - living and working together and still following the unique musical vision of the Stranglers. Meanwhile Hugh Cornwell is out and about with his solo material, but still playing his own version of classics from No More Heroes to Always The Sun.

The band reveal how they started as a pub rock act, touring in a converted ice cream van and how they stumbled into Punk by accident and were literally kicked out after a bad night in the car part outside Dingwalls. In their own words, the reason they managed to survive beyond Punk was simple - they sold records! Since then they've been through everything from prison to UFOs and still found time to play everywhere from the Falklands to the Albert Hall.

The complete story in their own words of one of the UK's most enduring rock 'n' roll bands and a chance to find out just what did happen the night the Stranglers played the Purley branch of the Young Conservatives Club back in 1976.

"Maybe word's getting through that there's a band with integrity who are a bunch of old b******s but they'll give the young f*****s a run for their money intellectually and musically!" Jean Jacques Burnel, 2001

"I'd spent 17 years with the same people, literally in each others pockets. I wanna spend time with some other people thank you very much!" Hugh Cornwell, 2001.

New Paul Roberts CD July 18th 2001

The latest Paul Roberts CD, the "Festival Man" E.P., was released on Monday, 16th July 2001. The track listing is: "Swim" (recorded in the studio); "Here" (recorded in the studio); "In Heaven She Walks" (Live); "Festival Man" (Live) and "Sinister" (Live). This is Paul's first acoustic recording.

More details can be found at: www.paul-roberts.co.uk.

Original Video Collection on DVD July 16th 2001

Also out now is "The Video Collection 1977-1982" on region 2 DVD (catalogue no. 4812379). Apparently, this release features the track-listing of the 1982 VHS release:

(Get a) Grip (On Yourself), Something Better Change, Peaches, Hanging Around, Straighten Out, 5 Minutes, No More Heroes, Sweden, Nice 'n' Sleazy, Duchess, Nuclear Device, Bearcage, Who Wants The World, Golden Brown, La Folie, Strange Little Girl.

We have no word as to whether any extras are on this disc.

"Strange Little Girl" Cover July 16th 2001

"Strange Little Girls", an album on Atlantic Records by Tori Amos is due in US shops on September 18th (and probably around the same time for the UK). This is an album of covers of songs originally written and performed by men and, as the title would suggest, features the Stranglers' 1982 single "Strange Little Girl". The first single from the album (purportedly to be released sometime in August) will be "Strange Little Girl" itself.
