Hans Wärmling Dies

The following sad news was forwarded to us via Tomas Carlsson in Sweden:

"We have just received the information that the former guitarist of the Stranglers Hans Waermling (i.e. Wärmling) died in a drowning accident in October 1995. Waermling is known as cowriter of "Strange little girl".

Could you please forward this information on your page. Source of the information is Hans Waermlings brother Peter."

Album Releases

1995 saw the release of three new albums:

"About Time" features eleven tracks and was recorded over a four-week period, following extensive rehearsals (an approach the band had not taken since "La Folie" in 1981). This album is on the new "when!" label, through "Castle Communications" -- a company well known in the UK for back-catalogue material (they were also involved in the "Saturday Night, Sunday Morning" project). In the UK, "About Time" is available on CD (WEN CD 001), cassette (WEN MC 001) and numbered, limited edition (3000 copies) vinyl (WEN LP 001). At this time, it does not look as though this album will be distributed in North America, other than as an import.

The long-awaited "The Sessions" (Essential Records, ESSCD 283) contains three sessions, which were recorded for BBC radio between 1977 and 1982. The track-listing is: Hanging Around; I Feel Like A Wog; Goodbye Toulouse; Something Better Change; Dead Ringer; No More Heroes; Burning Up Time; Bring On The Nubiles; The Man They Love To Hate; Nuclear Device/Genetix; Down In The Sewer.

Another interesting release is "The Stranglers and Friends: Live in Concert" (Receiver Records RRCD 195). This is a recording of the infamous 1980 gig at the Rainbow (London, UK) which featured an assortment of guests filling in for Hugh (who was incarcerated following a conviction for drug-possession). Seventeen tracks are included on this album, with appearances by such artists as Robert Smith, Pete Hammil, Ian Drury and John Ellis (!), among others. The sound-quality on this recording is surprisingly good.
