As with many other bands, a number of Stranglers boxed sets have
appeared over the years.
The first offering
in this category was the 1990 set "3" (Epic, 467395). With its thin card open-ended
jacket, this release appears to be less of a custom package
than a convenient way of offering digitally mastered copies of "Feline",
"Aural Sculpture" and "Dreamtime" at a discount price. No bonus tracks or
other extras are included. Oddly, although the packaging for each
individual CD (including the booklet) appears to be the same as the
standard CD release, the interiors of the CD cases are in
red, rather than black, plastic.
In contrast, "The Old Testament" (1994, EMI, CDSTRANG 1) is a fairly comprehensive
collection of the Stranglers' material from 1977 to 1982. This four-CD
set contains 83 tracks, including
the first six albums and associated single-material. It is noted
that the exceptions can be found on the "Rarities"
album (1988, EMI, CDP 7 91072 2).
The highlight of this package is the accompanying 112 page book, "The Men They
Love to Hate" by Chris Twomey. This volume traces the band from the early beginnings
and evolution into the team of Black, Burnel, Cornwell and Greenfield, up
to the point where they left EMI (in 1982, following the release of "Strange
Little Girl"). Chris Twomey has presented a well-written and -researched effort,
(also boasting a good selection of black-and-white prints) which is a must
for fans. Unfortunately, it's only available with the boxed set.

April 2004 saw the release of a three CD box set by East World Recordings (through
Plastic Head Distribution). Titled "A
Collection" (Catalogue No. EWO009CD), this set contains all the material from the
MK II albums "About Time", "Written in Red", "Coup de Grace" and "Friday the
Thirteenth" and comes packaged in a 3-CD plastic case.
This release replaced the more ambitious "New Testament", due to difficulties in
acquiring the rights to the first MK II album "In the Night".
